Size and Weight

Renowned as the world's smallest dog breed, Chihuahuas typically stand between 5 and 8 inches tall at the shoulder. Their weight is remarkably low, typically fluctuating between 2 to 6 pounds. However, some Chihuahuas might slightly exceed this weight, reaching up to 7 or 8 pounds, often attributed to factors like diet, exercise regimen, and genetic factors. It is essential to maintain a healthy weight to prevent health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, and joint problems. Generally, the size doesn't differ much between males and females, both embodying similar physical attributes.

Body Structure

Despite their petite stature, Chihuahuas boast a solid and well-built body structure that often surprises those unfamiliar with the breed. The body is compact and well-muscled, with a level back and slightly longer than tall body ratio, contributing to their balanced and agile movement. Their chests are broad and deep with well-sprung ribs, offering ample space for lung capacity despite their size. The limbs of a Chihuahua are lean yet muscular, reflecting their inherent agility and energetic nature. Their legs terminate in small, dainty feet with cushioned pads.

Coat

Chihuahuas are categorized into two varieties based on their coat type: the Smooth Coat (short-haired) and the Long Coat. The Smooth Coat Chihuahua sports a glossy, soft, and snug-fitting coat that exudes a velvety feel. On the other hand, the Long Coat Chihuahua's fur is soft, either flat or slightly wavy, and can often be seen forming a fringe on the ears and tail, giving it a more plush and elegant appearance. Despite the length and texture differences, both varieties are generally low shedders, making them relatively easier to maintain in terms of grooming.

Head

Chihuahuas possess a distinctive apple-shaped head, a unique characteristic of the breed. The skull is large and rounded, coupled with a short, pointed muzzle, leading to their characteristic expression. Their eyes, large and luminous, are set well apart, adding to their expressive and alert look. The eyes can be any color, though darker eyes are strongly preferred, especially in show dogs. The breed's ears are large and flared, standing erect when the dog is alert or at attention, and flaring to the sides at a 45-degree angle when relaxed, often likened to the wings of a bird in flight.

Tail

The tail of a Chihuahua is a continuation of their lively personality and body structure. It is moderately long, set high, and can be carried in various ways - either in a loop over the back or side, or making a curve resembling a sickle. The tail's tip lightly touches the back, completing the image of an elegant plume, especially in long-coated Chihuahuas. For smooth-coated Chihuahuas, the tail carries a slight fur, adding a touch of grace to their movement. Tail docking, a practice common in some breeds, is neither necessary nor accepted in Chihuahuas, as the tail contributes to their unique silhouette and expression.
